Have you ever been tempted to wear a jumpsuit in the office? Have you wondered if it would be appropriate? I am here to tell you it is totally ok and I encourage it! BUT, it must be done the right way in order for you to look your BEST!
A few weeks ago I decided to try it out and I wore the jumpsuit featured in this post to the office. I wanted to test out a few things before writing this post. First, I wanted to see how comfortable it was to wear all day and on the go. Second, I was interested to see if I got any comments or feedback from my co-workers…either approval or disapproval. 🙂
I am happy to say that I received positive feedback and some of my co-workers didn’t even notice I was in a jumpsuit! It was comfortable to wear all day with one exception; using the restroom!! I know you ladies know what I’m talking about! Any romper or jumpsuit has this problem! And if you drink your 8+ glasses a water a day, you WILL be in the restroom! With that being said, I still think it is fun option for work.
A few rules for wearing a jumpsuit in the office
Watch your neckline!
So many of the jumpsuits available have plunging or low necklines because they are primarily designed for casual wear or night out occasions. Just like shopping for work tops and dresses, make sure you keep it classy and don’t worry, that doesn’t mean it has to compromise the style!
Select the right fabric.
A cotton jumpsuit which is perfect for a weekend shopping trip or walk downtown is probably not going to transition well in the workplace. If you are in a professional or corporate office setting then cotton isn’t going to be the way to go. Select a fabric that has a dressier look and feel…similar to how you would choose a dress pant.
Add a blazer or jacket.
When you wear a jacket with a jumpsuit, it gives the appearance you are wearing a suit or nice pant outfit. A lot of jumpsuits have cut out back detailing that isn’t appropriate for the office, but when you cover it with a jacket, nobody knows! Adding a jacket transitions this one piece jumpsuit into a business professional “suit” in no time. I don’t know about you, but I’m all about versatile pieces in my wardrobe!
Wear a closed toe heel.
Wearing a dress heel with a jumpsuit and jacket will complete the look and you will feel professional and polished.
Jumpsuits – From the Office to a Night Out
I love the fact that you can transition a jumpsuit from the office to happy hour or date night. All you have to do to is make a few small changes. Remove your jacket, change your shoes and bag and you are ready to go! Don’t forget to touch up your makeup and you are sure to look your BEST!
My Jumpsuit Look – The Details
I purchased this black jumpsuit at a Banana Republic Factory Outlet last season. Sadly, it is no longer available online. I found many similar options and linked them below, along with other colors that are appropriate for the office. I linked jumpsuits at various price points, so make sure you check them all out!
My suit jacket is Tahari and they have so many options you can shop here. For a black jumpsuit, I suggest going with a traditional pattern like I styled for this shoot, or with a bold solid color jacket. With a grey or navy jumpsuit, a black or white jacket would keep the look conservative for the daytime. If you wear a patterned jumpsuit, make sure your jacket is solid in color and the texture doesn’t distract from the jumpsuit.
