The Classic Pencil Skirt
The pencil skirt is certainly not a new trend, but it is fashionable and practical for today’s working woman. The classic pencil skirt should be a staple in your office wear wardrobe! You can buy them as separates or as part of a classic women’s suit. I use the word “classic” to describe the pencil skirt because it never goes out of style and can always be seen on fashionable and influential women around the world.
What is a “pencil skirt?”
A pencil skirt is a slim-fitting skirt with a straight, narrow cut. The hem generally falls to, or is just below the knee and is tailored for a close fit. It is named for its shape; long and slim like a pencil. Christian Dior designed the modern pencil skirt and introduced it in 1954. Click here for a short article on the history of the pencil skirt!

Versatility of the Pencil Skirt
You can find pencil skirts in varying fabrics and lengths. A denim or cotton blend skirt may be perfect for the weekend or a spring shower party. A leather pencil skirt would look amazing for “date night” or “girls night out!” For the office, there are thousands of pencil skirts available in suiting fabric, wool or linen.
I am wearing a traditional pencil skirt in this shoot, and it can easily be styled for casual and professional looks. I have paired it with Nine West heels and a basic J.Crew white shell. I could throw on a white linen jacket to complete the look for my office in the summer. It could also be styled with a pair of Jack Rogers like these and a tank top for a more casual look.
So many Pencil Skirts!
I am wearing a skirt from Ann Taylor’s last season collection, so I could not find it online to link for you. I’m sorry, but I do keep pieces longer than one season! 🙂 I did research several retailers for affordable pencil skirts to wear to the office and I have linked them all below.
Don’t forget the details!

Tips for Pencil Skirts in the Office
- Don’t wear it too tight – You should be able to get in and out of a car gracefully!
- Don’t wear it too short – That is called a mini skirt and more appropriate for a night out!
- Don’t wear it with flats – Come on girl, get your heels up!
- I thoroughly believe in the saying, “Keep your head, heels and standards high!” However, I’m not above keeping a stylish pair of flats like these in my bag or office for those long days, walks to the car, or walks around Target after work! (Totally a splurge item, but I LOVE mine and they get soooo much use!)
I hope your closet gains a pencil skirt or two this season! I am currently shopping a newer trend in pencil skirts; the midi! Stay tuned for a future post and review on this longer version of the pencil skirt! Do you already own one? Are you thinking about it? Leave me a note below and tell me your thoughts on this post and whether you would be interested in styling a midi pencil skirt!

I wish I could pull off a pencil skirt! Some things seem like they aren’t meant for thicker ladies. 😕

Jenny,
Do you know any tailors/seamstresses in St. A? I would love to be a pencil skirt fan but need mine hemmed!

I have used AAA Stitchery on US1 for several bridesmaid dresses and to let out pants’ hems. I have also referred male co-workers there to get their suits taken in and everyone I know had a good experience!
